The Outdoor Ethernet Surge Protector is a surge protection device (SPD) that is inserted inline on an RJ45 CAT6/CAT5/CAT5e cable to prevent damage to electronic networking equipment. This device can be mounted outdoors and is resistant to weather conditions, with a weatherproof IP44 rating. It comes in an enclosed box that can be secured with a lock (not included).
The surge protector guards against powerful surges, including direct lightning strikes, voltage spikes, and PoE overvoltages. In addition to primary protection against a direct strike on a line, the thunder arrestor also offers secondary protection, shielding against EMF-induced surges from nearby lightning or Ethernet.
The use of gas discharge tubes (GDTs) overcomes some of the limitations of diode-based protectors, providing superior energy handling capability. GDTs are suitable for surges of both high and low frequency, effectively intercepting and safely dissipating the excess voltage through a contained plasma gas.
The Ethernet Surge Suppressor TP303 employs GDTs on all 4 pairs (8 wires), ensuring the safety of a wide range of valuable networking components, such as switches, routers, modems, bridges, repeaters, or any part of an internet service network.
Mounting holes allow for easy installation on a wall, network panel, cabinet, or rack using screws (not included). The RJ45 lightning protection supports Gigabit 10/100/1000 (GbE) and high-power PoE+ networks, with a maximum data rate of 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps - 1000 Mbps) without affecting local area network speed performance.
The PoE surge protector enables a single RJ-45 cable to provide both data connection and electric power to devices such as wireless access points, IP and security cameras, VoIP phones, and computers. The surge arrestor TP303 is designed to protect power-supply equipment (PSE) connected to a network from transient overvoltages, supporting both Mode A (Pins 1,2+ 3,6-) and Mode B (7,8+ 4,5-) of the 802.3af standard.
The Ethernet lightning arrestor must be properly grounded to function effectively. The 11-inch, 12 AWG ground wire on the surge protector needs to be connected to a ground source, such as a ground busbar on an electrical panel or network rack cabinet, a grounding block, or a grounding rod. The surge protector can be used with both unshielded twisted pair (UTP) and shielded (STP) cables.
The Line-to-Line Ethernet surge protection mode helps safeguard against short circuits between different network system nodes, while the Line-to-Ground mode protects against short circuits between the network node and the earth. With both modes protected, the risk of damage is minimized.
The surge protector's nominal discharge current of 5KA, with an 8/20μs waveshape, ensures the RJ45 lightning arrestor remains functional after 15 surges. When the surge voltage exceeds the designed rating, the device "begins to clamp" and conducts the excess energy directly to the electrical grounding system, providing bidirectional clamping to protect against both over- and under-voltage conditions.
Investing in a small, easy-to-install surge protector with the necessary features and proven reliability can be the safest and most cost-effective solution for protecting your entire Ethernet network.
