The Outdoor Ethernet Surge Protector is a surge protection device (SPD) designed to be inserted inline on an RJ45 CAT6/CAT5/CAT5e cable to prevent damage to electronic networking equipment. This weatherproof (IP44) device can be mounted outside and offers powerful protection against surges, including direct lightning strikes, voltage spikes, and PoE overvoltages.
The surge protector utilizes Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs) to dissipate voltage transients through a contained plasma gas, effectively harnessing excess voltage and releasing it safely. This technology overcomes the limitations of diode-based protectors, making it suitable for a wide range of surge events, both high and low frequency.
The Ethernet Surge Suppressor TP303 features GDTs on all 4 pairs (8 wires), ensuring the safety of valuable components such as switches, routers, modems, bridges, repeaters, and other internet service network equipment. It supports Gigabit 10/100/1000 (GbE) data rates with no impact on speed performance in the local area network.
The surge protector also supports both Mode A (Pins 1,2+ 3,6-) and Mode B (7,8+ 4,5-) of the 802.3af PoE standard, delivering up to 15.4 watts per port with 12.95W available to the powered device. It is also compatible with the 802.3at (PoE+) standard, which can deliver up to 30 watts with 25.5 watts available to devices.
To ensure proper operation, the Ethernet lightning arrestor must be properly grounded through the shortest path. This can be achieved by connecting the 11-inch, 12 AWG ground wire to a ground busbar on an electrical panel, a grounding block, a grounding rod, or the grounded outlet center screw.
The surge protector offers protection in both Line-to-Line and Line-to-Ground modes, ensuring that damage is minimized regardless of where the transient occurs. It has a Nominal Discharge Current of 5KA, which defines the peak value of the current that can be passed through the SPD while remaining functional after 15 surges.
When the surge protector's designed voltage rating is exceeded, it "begins to clamp" and starts to conduct energy directly to the electrical grounding system. The bidirectional clamping on the CAT5 surge protector allows levels above and below the reference voltage, effectively clamping the voltage that can cause damage.
Investing in this small, easy-to-install surge protector with all the necessary features and proven reliability can be the safest and most cost-effective solution for protecting your entire Ethernet network.
