The Ethernet Surge Protector (Pack of 2) is a surge protection device (SPD) that is inserted inline on an RJ45 CAT6/CAT5/CAT5e cable. This device is designed to prevent damage to electronic networking equipment. It can be mounted on a DIN Rail or used as a standalone unit.
The surge protector safeguards against powerful surges, including direct lightning strikes, voltage spikes, or PoE overvoltages. In addition to the primary protection, the thunder arrestor offers secondary protection, which will arrest EMF-induced surges (nearby lightning ethernet).
Gas discharge tubes (GDTs) are employed to overcome some of the disadvantages of diode-based protectors, such as energy handling capability. The GDTs are suitable for almost all surges, whether high or low frequency, providing rigorous spark discharge control performance.
The Ethernet Surge Suppressor TP309 utilizes a Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) on all 4 pairs (8 wires). These gas discharge tubes dissipate voltage transients through a contained plasma gas, which harnesses excess voltage in the incoming power and releases it safely. This ensures the safety of a wide array of valuable components, such as switches, routers, modems, bridges, repeaters, or any part of the internet service network.
The gigabit surge protector supports an ultra-fast maximum data rate of 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps - 1000 Mbps) for Gigabit 10/100/1000 (GbE) transfer, without affecting the speed performance in the local area network. The PoE Surge Protector allows a single RJ-45 cable to provide both data connection and electric power to devices such as wireless access points, IP and security cameras, VoIP phones, and computers.
The Surge Arrestor TP303 is designed to protect PSE (power-supply equipment) connected to a network from transient overvoltages. The lightning protector PoE supports both Mode A (Pins 1,2+ 3,6-) and B (7,8+ 4,5-) of the 802.3af standard. The 802.3af (PoE) can deliver up to 15.4 watts per port with 12.95W at the powered device, while 802.3at (PoE+) can deliver up to 30 watts with 25.5 watts available to devices.
The Ethernet lightning arrestor must be properly grounded to function effectively. When used on a DIN Rail, it is connected to the ground through the rail, and when used as a standalone unit, a ground wire needs to be connected from the surge protector to the ground through the shortest path.
The lightning arrestor can be used with unshielded twisted pair (UTP) or shielded (STP) cables. It provides protection in both Line-to-Line and Line-to-Ground modes, ensuring that damage is minimized regardless of where the transient occurs.
The Nominal Discharge Current of 5KA defines the peak value of the current that can be passed through the SPD, with a waveshape of 8/20μs microseconds, where the RJ45 lightning arrestor remains functional after 15 surges.
Investing in a small, easy-to-install surge protector with all the needed features and proven reliability can be the safest and most cost-effective solution for protecting your entire Ethernet network.
